What is it?
Hollywood is a multimedia-oriented programming language that can be used to create graphical
applications very easily. It was designed with the paradigm to make software creation
as easy as possible in mind. Thus, Hollywood is suited for beginners and advanced
users alike. Hollywood comes with an extensive function library (encompassing about 500 different
commands) that simplifies the creation of 2D games, presentations, and applications, to a great
extent. It has been in development since 2002 and hence is today a very mature and stable software
package.
One of the highlights of Hollywood is its inbuilt cross-compiler which can be used
to deploy software on many different platforms without having to change a single line of the
code. The cross-compiler can compile for all platforms from any platform Hollywood
is running on. For instance, you can compile Mac OS X application bundles using the
Windows version of Hollywood.
Hollywood is a light-weight, but still powerful programming language that is just about
two megabytes in size and does not require any external components. Hence, it is ideal for
creating programs which run right out of the box. In fact, Hollywood programs will run perfectly from
an USB flash drive without any prior installation whatsoever. The following platform architectures
are currently supported by Hollywood:
- AmigaOS 3 (m68k)
- AmigaOS 4 (ppc)
- AROS (i386)
- Linux (i386)*
- Mac OS X (i386)*
- Mac OS X (ppc)*
- MorphOS (ppc)
- WarpOS (m68k/ppc)
- Windows (i386)
* Hollywood can save executables for Mac OS X and Linux but it is currently not available
in a stand-alone version for these platforms. Thus, you currently have to use either the Windows or
AmigaOS compatible version of Hollywood to save executables for Mac OS X and Linux.

25-Sep-2011: Hollywood for iPad
Hollywood has recently been ported to the iPad (ARM architecture) by order of a commercial customer
who needs to use it on tablet devices in clinics and hotels. A small demo video of Hollywood running
on iPad has been uploaded to YouTube. Unfortunately, it will most likely
not be possible to integrate iPad support into Hollywood's cross-compiler because of several technical and
legal restrictions that iPad apps are subject to. For commercial customers, however, we can now offer
several solutions to get their Hollywood projects converted into iPad apps. Please contact us.
24-Apr-2011: Hollywood 4.8 released - now with Linux support!
Hollywood can now also compile executables for Linux. To make Hollywood
compiled executables as portable as possible across the different Linux distros, package
dependencies were minimized: Executables only require X11 to run. Thus, you can run
executables compiled by Hollywood on almost any Linux system without having to install
any packages first. Click here to learn more.
